New Taipei City Handball Teams Celebrate Double Victory: Xinzhuang and Zhanghe Junior High Schools Win International Handball Age Group Championships
[New Taipei City News] New Taipei City handball key focus schools, the Xinzhuang Junior High School and the Zhanghe Junior High School girls' handball teams, were honored at the city government meeting today (4th) and awarded NT$200,000 each in training funds. Xinzhuang Junior High School's Chang Jia-Yi received the award for winning the U16 Girls’ Championship at the "2024 34th Speikboden Summer Cup" in Italy; Zhanghe Junior High School's Wu Yu-Shan received the award for winning the U13 Girls’ Championship at the "2024 Dronninglund Cup" in Denmark. Both schools shared the good news and honor of their international victories with the citizens during the summer break.
Mayor Hou You-Yi stated that it is a remarkable achievement for the Xinzhuang and Zhanghe Junior High School girls' handball teams to win championships in Europe. Participation in international competitions is highly educational for middle school athletes, expanding their international vision and gaining valuable experience. He encouraged the athletes to continue to shine on the international stage. He also expressed gratitude to the schools, coaches, and mentors for their selfless dedication to sports development, cultivating outstanding athletes who bring glory to the country, and urged the athletes to keep on improving their skills.
The Sports Bureau indicated that the Xinzhuang Junior High School girls' handball team, competing as a 15-year-old team in the 16-year-old division at the "2024 34th Speikboden Summer Cup " in Italy, faced over 2,000 young athletes from 11 European countries, including Italy, Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg. The Xinzhuang team defeated strong European teams such as Germany, Italy, and Hungary, winning all five preliminary matches and entering the finals as the top team in their group. They ultimately claimed the U16 Championship, adding a glorious record to the team's history. Team captain Chang Jia-Yi said, "Representing Taiwan for the first time abroad, facing opponents with taller builds, we had to rely on speed and defense to secure ball possession and seize every shooting opportunity! The coach's on-site guidance was crucial, helping us understand what to do. With the encouragement from teammates, we gained confidence and support, which led to this excellent result. This experience is particularly memorable and valuable in my career."
The Zhanghe Junior High School girls' handball team participated in the "2024 Dronninglund Cup " in Denmark, where 248 teams from 15 countries competed. In the U13 Girls’ division, there were 25 teams from 8 countries. The Zhanghe team demonstrated excellent skills and teamwork against strong European opponents, advancing from the preliminary rounds to the finals and winning all 8 matches to secure the U13 Championship.
Coach Li Xiezheng said, "The young players’ proactive performance despite the intense sun and rain earned them high honors. Their superb skills impressed many, and other foreign players and spectators cheered for them! Through the competition and learning from international players, we achieved cultural exchange through sports activities, establishing successful national diplomacy!"
