2026 New Taipei City Wan Jin Shi Marathon Kicks Off at Dawn Kenya’s Enock ONCHARI and Catherine CHEROTICH Claim Championships
【New Taipei City News】The 2026 New Taipei City Wan Jin Shi Marathon kicked off this morning (March 15) at Wanli’s Feicui Bay. Kenya’s Enock ONCHARI won the men’s marathon title, while Catherine CHEROTICH secured the women’s championship. In the 10K race, Tseng Ting-wei claimed the men’s title and Chen Mei-tung took the women’s title.

The Sports Department stated that the New Taipei City Wan Jin Shi Marathon is Taiwan’s first race certified with the World Athletics Gold Label. In 2026, the event invited 16 elite international athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, and other countries. A total of runners from 39 countries participated, including 372 international athletes, with overall participation exceeding 12,000 runners. In the men’s marathon, Kenya’s Enock ONCHARI finished first with a time of 2:12:46, while Kenya’s Catherine CHEROTICH won the women’s marathon in 2:32:32. The top domestic marathon finishers were Chou Ting-yin (2:28:43) in the men’s category and Lei Li-sha (2:53:01) in the women’s category, with Chou securing his third consecutive domestic men’s marathon title at Wan Jin Shi. In the 10K race, Tseng Ting-wei finished first in 30:47, while Chen Mei-tung won the women’s title in 38:01.

The New Taipei City Government and the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association organized the event in accordance with World Athletics regulations. By integrating resources from city departments and sponsors, nearly 5,000 personnel—including police officers, firefighters, medical staff, volunteers, local cheering teams, and event staff—were mobilized to provide a safe, friendly, and high-quality race environment, continuing to build an internationally recognized brand event for New Taipei City.

With “Sports Equality” as its core theme, this year’s event introduced a non-binary gender category for the first time. Visually impaired pacing runners were arranged for both the full marathon and challenge categories, and 500 exclusive entries were reserved for women in the Challenge Group. These initiatives aim to encourage participation from runners of diverse backgrounds, allowing everyone to run freely and challenge themselves. The event’s key visual design combines the coastal mountain-and-sea scenery of northern Taiwan with silhouettes of runners, symbolizing a race without boundaries or labels and showcasing the spirit of diversity and inclusion.

Athlete services were further enhanced this year, including the addition of a post-race yoga and stretching zone led by professional instructors. An interactive runner silhouette activity was also introduced at the venue, allowing participants to scan a QR code and display their images on the main stage screen in real time, adding fun and engagement to the event. Finishers were greeted and encouraged by notable figures including Lin Ke-tung, Chang Chia-che, Liao Yen-chun, Hsu Chi-sheng, and Fubon Angels (Dan Dan, Lizi, Jie Jie, Jie Mi, and Anna). Generous post-race refreshments such as Shimen rice dumplings, along with sports massage services, ice baths, and hot showers, provided runners with a satisfying recovery experience.

The Sports Department added that finisher certificates are provided digitally. Participants can scan the QR code on their bibs to access their results. For more information about the 2026 New Taipei City Wan Jin Shi Marathon, please visit the official website and Facebook page.
