The New Taipei City Government Youth Department sent New Taipei's dance king, Diao, to South Korea to participate in the CIDC Street Dance Championship, where he won second place!
The New Taipei City Government Youth Department has made strides in helping young talents reach the international stage, with exciting news of a newly earned silver medal! Recently, the Youth Department took Diao , the champion from the “New Taipei FUN Street International Dance Competition” held in August, to South Korea to participate in the “Cheonan International Street Dance Championship CIDC,” where he competed fiercely against dancers from various countries. Diao emerged as the runner-up in the Freestyle Open Session 1 on 1 category, bringing pride to Taiwan!
In an effort to elevate New Taipei’s annual street dance event to an international level, this year’s “2024 New Taipei FUN Street International Dance Competition” was coordinated with the CIDC in Cheonan, South Korea. The collaboration allowed the champion of New Taipei’s “All Style 1 on 1” category to automatically qualify as a seeded competitor in CIDC. On August 11, Diao triumphed in the finals of New Taipei FUN Street and was granted travel, accommodation, and class subsidies by the Youth Department, allowing him to compete in South Korea as a seeded contestant. Starting from the Round of 16 as a seed, Diao went on to defeat top dancers from China, Japan, eventually securing second place in the Freestyle Open Session 1 on 1 event! New Taipei Mayor Hou You-Yi quickly took to social media to congratulate Diao and express his praise.
Meanwhile, other Taiwanese dancers also performed exceptionally well in different CIDC events. In the choreography competition’s student category, the “HRC Beast Crew,” winners of the youth choreography division at New Taipei FUN Street International Dance Competition, claimed the gold prize.
The New Taipei City Government has long supported diverse development for youth and promoted street dance, having hosted street dance competitions for 16 years, with this year’s participation and audience numbers breaking records. New Taipei Youth Department Director Marcia Chiu stated, “We encourage young people to push their limits and strive for international honors. This year, for the first time, we partnered with an international street dance event and sent talented dancers to compete abroad. We are very grateful for Diao’s efforts, which have proven the strength of Taiwanese dancers. We hope this will inspire young dancers in Taiwan to keep chasing their dreams!”
During the New Taipei FUN Street International Dance Competition in August, Madman, the organizer of CIDC, also served as a judge and praised the scale and quality of the event in New Taipei.
In an interview, Diao shared that he began dancing in high school, experienced injuries, and even faced moments where he lost motivation. He withdrew from all teaching and performance opportunities and spent two years rebuilding himself. Through a process of self-exploration, revisiting life experiences, and piecing together his shattered core values, Diao found the strength to push through dark times. He firmly believes that "facing problems is the only way to overcome them, and the answers you find will lead you to the next challenge." After overcoming these hurdles, he has become more confident, breaking traditional patterns and embracing creative freedom. Since securing the seeded spot in August, Diao has continued to train in strength, endurance, and cardio while exploring various music genres and dance styles to enhance his ability to create freely in real-time during competitions.
The New Taipei City Government Youth Department continues to support young people in pursuing multifaceted development and aims to establish more international connections in future competitions, guiding youth to boldly chase their dreams on the global stage.
