British Office Taipei Representative Ruth Bradley-Jones paid a visit to New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih yesterday (August 11th), engaging in in-depth discussions on topics such as urban resilience and renewable energy. Both parties expressed hopes of expanding opportunities for collaboration to drive industrial upgrading and sustainable development.
Mayor Hou emphasized that both New Taipei and the United Kingdom are committed to building urban resilience. New Taipei has long maintained a high level of crisis awareness, actively cooperating with the central government to promote disaster preparedness drills and early warning systems. The city has also taken the lead in implementing various emergency response measures to ensure the safety of its residents. Mayor Hou highlighted that the development of renewable energy is a key factor in enhancing urban resilience. With the UK’s leading expertise in offshore wind power and hydrogen energy, New Taipei looks forward to strengthening cooperation with the UK to jointly build a sustainable, secure, and highly competitive city.
Representative Bradley-Jones noted that beyond their complementary strengths in renewable energy, Taiwan and the UK also make ideal partners in the high-tech sector. Leveraging New Taipei’s robust advanced manufacturing capabilities and the UK’s exceptional research and development environment, both sides have the opportunity to strengthen cooperation in the semiconductor industry and broaden exchanges in cybersecurity resilience and disaster response, further promoting bilateral ties and industrial collaboration.
Other attendees of the meeting included Natasha Harrington, Political and Communications Director at the British Office Taipei; Gareth Howell, British Assistance and Services Officer; and Senior Political Officer Chen Yu-wei. Representing the New Taipei City Government were Deputy Secretary-General Ko Ching-chung, Director-General of the Secretariat Juh Hui-mei, Director-General of the Transportation Department Chung Ming-shi, and Deputy Director-General of the Economic Development Department Huang Bi-yu.
