"Thank you for producing such excellent work." The unique charm of Taiwan's cultural and creative design is evident in the fruitful results of the "New Taipei Youth Overseas Exhibition Project."
[New Taipei City News] The New Taipei City Government Youth Department launched the "New Taipei Youth Overseas Exhibition Project" for the first time this year, leading eight groups of cultural and creative entrepreneurs to South Korea to participate in two of the most internationally recognized large-scale cultural and creative exhibitions. The exhibited works were rich and diverse, showcasing distinct Taiwanese characteristics, and received wide acclaim. John (주정연), the CEO of OC MAKERS, also is the organizer of the Busan Illustration Fair, expressed want to collaborate with New Taipei City, take Korean and Taiwanese creators to explore other overseas markets to show our cultural and creative abilities in the future.
To assist New Taipei cultural and creative entrepreneurs in expanding their markets overseas, the New Taipei City Government Youth Department launched the "New Taipei Youth Overseas Exhibition Project" for the first time this year (2024). Within just 10 days, a total of 52 teams registered, and after selection, eight teams were chosen. These included four teams participated in the "Handarty Korea" exhibition in August: Agaric Garden (艾格瑞), Sentimental Studio (善感工室), murmur (嬤嬤), and True Nii (初泥); as well as four teams participated in the "Busan Illustration Fair" in November: MaikaoAiChiou (麥考艾裘), ririkoko (梨々子々), Fangtzu (房子), and Tang Wenching (湯雯晴).
Marcia Qiu, the Director of New Taipei City Government Youth Department, stated that the bureau actively assists young entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurship assistance services cover three areas: "Social," "Technology," and "Art/Design." In the field of cultural and creative entrepreneurship, in addition to providing artistic startup bases, the bureau has further assisted cultural and creative entrepreneurs in expanding their markets overseas this year. Entrepreneurs often face challenges when exhibiting abroad, including language barriers, cultural differences, and differing financial models. Therefore, the New Taipei City Government Youth Department has arranged a comprehensive exhibition service that not only provides booth subsidies, exhibition guidance, optimized display arrangements, and product pricing for the selected teams, but also deploys interpreters for Chinese and Korean to assist in sales and supports mobile payment, allowing visitors to directly pay creators, facilitating a seamless exhibition experience for New Taipei's cultural and creative youth.
murmur, known for creating bionic plants from vegetable-tanned leather, participated in the Seoul Design Festival in 2018, with only a table to display its work that time. This year, participated in Handarty Korea under the New Taipei City Government Youth Department's program, they had a complete exhibition space to present their brand style and showcased a full range of products. During the four-day event, Korean consumers expressed their admiration for their leather creations daily, saying, "Thank you for producing such excellent work!"
ririkoko, who specializes in combining Taiwanese snacks with cute animal characters, participated in an overseas exhibition for the first time. After much deliberation about selecting works, she decided to bring all her items to the Busan Illustration Fair for testing. Even before the first day of the fair, many Korean creators were eager to observe her booth, and during the three-day exhibition, the crowd was lively; her pearl milk tea-themed products sold out completely. According to interpreters on-site, it was discovered that although bubble tea is a very popular Taiwanese product in Korea, no design items themed around bubble tea have appeared in the creative market until now. This also boosted the confidence of first-time exhibitors in facing future challenges!
To better understand the local market in Korea, Marcia Qiu personally flew to the Busan Illustration Fair in November to engage with the event organizers and assess market trends in Korea as a cultural and creative powerhouse. John, the CEO of OC MAKERS, positively noted the New Taipei City Government's willingness to invest resources to lead cultural and creative teams to participate in overseas exhibitions for exposure, and expressed hope for more collaboration opportunities in the future, together bringing Korean creators and New Taipei teams to exhibit in other countries and expand greater business opportunities. Chiu emphasized that the Youth Department will continue to carry out this program, helping more New Taipei young artists to expand overseas markets, and looks forward to the teams sparking more creative inspiration through exhibition exchanges. The goal of the program is to provide Taiwanese young creators with opportunities to understand and address these challenges, hoping to establish a model from this experience that allows for exhibitions in other countries and the expansion of more markets in the future. It is also anticipated that, through their efforts, they will represent Taiwan's creative energy worldwide. Although the youth may seem small, working together with the New Taipei City Governments Youth Department makes them a national team striving for recognition abroad.
